My white co-worker: the moment he found out that my other co-worker and I were of Korean ethnic background, asked "So, since you guys are Korean, lemme ask you this."
As soon as we heard this, eyes were-a-rollin'. My Half-Korean co-worker and I let out a sigh and patiently waited for whatever this question was going to be.
"How do you guys feel about the new North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un?" He asks, ignoring the eye rolling and groaning, or being oblivious to it.
I answer "Well, since I was born in Portland and grew up in the U.S., I care about it probably as much as you do."
Then he works on trying to get me to care about it. "No, but see...it affects your people...."
-then he asks the most bizarre, stupid, fuckingidiotic and surprisingly frequent question that ALL Koreans get-
"Are either of you North Korean? Or Do you have family that is?"
I don't know about the rest of you Koreans, but I'm fuggin' tired of explaining this shit to them.
My half-Korean co-worker says "Yeah, I was born in Kentucky. My dad's white. I'm with her. I don't give a shit."
Then we all turned and looked at my Indian co-worker and started in on him "Are you related to Ghandi? Do you like curry? I really liked the book Siddhartha. Are you hindu? How do you feel about Pakistan?" JUST KIDDING!!!!! Actually what really happened, was after this freak left the room (the freak who asked about North Korea) we all made fun of him.
